Keeping Your Well Water Safe

Staying informed about the quality of your well water is an important step in being a responsible homeowner. After all, when you are using city water, you can rest assured the water is coming from a water treatment plant where it is being regularly tested and treated. With a private well, on the other hand, you are responsible for ensuring the water is safe and of good quality. To ensure your water meets these standards, here are some steps you should take to stay informed about the quality of your water.

Test it Regularly

Ideally, your water should be tested at least once per year, though some experts recommend having it tested twice per year. An easy way to remember this is to simply schedule your well inspection and your water test at the same time.  When getting your water tested for the first time, be sure to use a certified lab and to get the most thorough testing possible. This will help you gain a better understanding of what is in your water and whether or not there are any contaminants that need to be addressed. In subsequent years, you may only need to run a basic test that tests for those substances for which your well is at the most risk. If you live in an agricultural area, for example, it may be best to get your water tested regularly for pesticides.

Invest in Water Quality Meters

Between tests conducted by a professional, you should test your water with the help of water quality meters. While conductivity meters, TDS (total dissolved solids) meters and PH meters may not be able to test the water quality nearly as well as a professional test, they can help with monitoring water quality between tests. The meters are relatively affordable and will inform you of significant changes.
