23 May History of Burley, Idaho and the Growth of Agriculture
Burley, Idaho is a small city in the southern region of the state that was established as an agricultural center in 1887.
The area was initially home to several Native American tribes such as the Shoshone and Bannock Indians. By 1889, there were already over 500 settlers living in the area, many coming from other parts of the United States and Europe.
The city of Burley was officially incorporated in 1901, and it quickly became a center for agricultural production. The area’s fertile soil combined with the abundance of water from nearby rivers made it an ideal environment for crop cultivation. Potatoes were among the first crops grown there, followed by sugar beets, alfalfa, and grains. Cattle ranching also became a major industry in the area, as did dairy farming.
In the early 20th century, new technologies were developed that enabled farmers to be more productive and efficient. This period is often referred to as the “Golden Age of Agriculture” for Burley due to the growth and success of their agricultural sector. New businesses were also established in Burley, such as grain elevators, feed mills, and even a woolen mill.
The city’s population steadily grew over the years. In 1950, there were just over 5,000 residents living in Burley. By 2000, that number had more than doubled. This growth was largely due to the success of its agricultural industry and the increased demand for food throughout the country.
Today, Burley is still an important center for agriculture in Idaho. Many of its original crops are still grown there, along with wheat, barley, hay, and other specialty crops.
